Jim Holden and his coffee

Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, which are the seeds of berries from the Coffea plant.

So far so good, but in The Expanse universe, coffee is so much more.

The coffee machine in the galley of the Rocinante is one of the most important pieces of equipment. Holden Books • TV is a coffee junkie (or connoisseur, depending who you ask) and the discovery that the Roci has a pretty good coffee machine and a large supply of fresh coffee to brew some is making him very happy.

The fact that the Rocinante has such a great coffee maker leads to the direct conclusion that coffee is just as popular on Mars as it is important. It seems to be an imperative that every ship of the MCRN is equipped with a machine and the supplies are well stocked.

The coffee machine gets its moment in the TV series as well.

Coffee and the value of a particular good coffee is a recurring topic in the books. In Caliban's War it often contrasts to Avasarala's Books • TV preference for tea.

In Abaddon's Gate, Tilly offers Anna a particularly good bulb on board the Behemoth.

In Cibola Burn it is described how the crew likes their coffee:

Bulbs Edit

Drinking fluids in low or null gravity requires special containers to prevent the fluid from drifting around. In the books these containers are continuously called “bulbs”. They can be imagined as a bulbous container of a non-breakable material with a flat, magnetic bottom and a sealable suction nipple on the other end. They can be attached to any metallic surface, like spaceship tables.

In the TV series, they look more like metal travel mugs.
