The Expanse show features numerous weapons: ship-based (Point Defense Cannons, Missiles, Railguns), small-arms (hand-held guns, hand-held explosives), and improvised weapons. Overview[]
A number of firearms and other weapons are used in the filming of The Expanse, including specialized personal weapons of the main and recurring characters and more general weapons used by minor characters and extras. The TV show appears to use handguns derived from those available in the early contemporary 21st century. These have been dressed to look futuristic.[1]
Handguns[]
Star Helix Pistol[]
The standard issue sidearm used by Star Helix Security personnel is a visually modified Glock 26 Advanced Airsoft pistol (a fictional variant of the Glock 26 with an accessory rail, grip extension and compensated extended barrel originally manufactured by Tokyo Marui).
Miller's personal handgun[]
While a cop on Ceres working for Star Helix Security, Joe Miller carries a standard issue pistol. While on Eros he recovers a revolver from a United Nations (UN) Black-ops "tac-team" member, a dressed up Chiappa Rhino 50DS, which becomes his preferred sidearm throughout the show.
1st Generation Martian Pistol[]
The Standard 1st generation Martian Congressional Republic (MCR) military sidearm is based upon the WE X-series airsoft gun, which is based on the Springfield XD-9.
2nd Generation Martian Pistol[]
The 2nd generation Martian military sidearm appear to be modified Magpul FMG-9's minus the carry handle, fore grip and stock.
Standard United Nations Pistol[]
The standard UN military sidearm, used by the United Nation Navy (UNN) and by UN tac-teams, is based on a Umarex Walther Red Hawk.
Protogen Security Pistol[]
The sidearm used by Protogen security forces also appears to be modified Magpul FMG-9's minus the carry handle, fore grip and stock.
Shotguns[]
Amos Burton's personal shotgun[]
A heavily modified FN SCAR-L CQC with a magwell cover plays the part of Amos's trademark auto-shotgun.
Submachine Guns[]
OPA Submachine Gun[]
Outer Planets Alliance (OPA) forces used in the attack on Thoth Station were equipped with a SMG based on the Kriss Vector.
United Nations Submachine Gun[]
The SMG used by UN Tac-teams is also based on the Kriss Vector with an extended magazine and has the buttstock removed.
Assault Rifles[]
1st Generation Martian Long Gun[]
The standard Martian Long Gun used by the Martian Marine Corps (MMC) is actually a slightly modified APS UAR Airsoft rifle.
2nd Generation Martian Long Gun[]
The 2nd generation Martian Long Gun appears to be a heavily modified version of the Beretta Cx4 Storm.
Rifles[]
United Nations Long Gun[]
The standard rifle used by the UN military, and also Star Helix Security, is based on an Airsoft Umarex SL9 resembling a Heckler & Koch SL8-4 with a G36K length barrel, handguard, and various futuristic modifications.
Grenade Launchers[]
Protogen Gel Gun[]
The Gel Gun used by Protogen Security forces to subdue the scientists under their guard on Thoth Station appears to be a heavily modified version of the Brügger & Thomet GL-06 grenade launcher with an additional FN40GL grenade launcher inverted and mounted on top of the barrel.

The NTW-08 Hi-Explosive Grenade is used by the MMC.
Other personal weapons[]
The Executive Officer of the Canterbury kept a large collection of antique firearms in his stateroom aboard the ship.[2]

'Smart gun' technology[]
As portrayed by the TV show, it appears that 'smart guns' are available in the future. They are 'smart' in the sense that they will not allow an unauthorized user to fire them. This is explicitly explained by the prison guards at The Pit when they indicate that their sidearms are biometrically keyed to each individual guard.[3]
