The Executive Officer of the Canterbury reported to the Captain as the second in command of the ship.

Biography[]

Background[]

The XO lost his sanity over the course of six months aboard the Canterbury, eventually failing to report for duty.

Throughout the series[]

When directed by the Captain to check on the XO, James Holden gets a crowbar from Amos Burton to pry open the door of the XO’s quarters. After slowly panning and surveying the room, and noticing a pistol has been removed from its rack, Holden eventually finds the XO standing behind a partition, holding the missing pistol. The XO steps around in dirt which is scattered on the floor of his quarters, talks to his plants, and whines about them not bringing enough light aboard the ship. He starts laughing and shoots his bedside monitor, his laughter turning into deep sobs.  Shortly after, Shed straps the XO onto a gurney while the XO incoherently mumbles about plants.[1]

He is presumed dead after the Canterbury was destroyed.

Personality[]

The XO has a fixation with plants and classic weapons. His walls are lined with all manner of gunpowder-based firearms alongside drawings of plants.

Trivia[]

  • Syfy's website lists as a 'Fun Fact' for the first episode that the scene with the XO was the first shot of the show.[2]
  • This unnamed XO does not exist in the books, as Holden is already the Canterbury's XO.
  • There are multiple scrapes (some deep) on the door visible when Holden is standing outside the XO's quarters. They're at the same height as where Holden places the crowbar when he pries the door open.
