"Assured Destruction" is the third episode of the third season of The Expanse. Overall, it is the twenty-sixth episode. It aired on April 25, 2018.
Synopsis
Earth strategizes a costly ploy to gain advantage in the war against Mars; Anna struggles to convince Sorrento-Gillis to do the right thing; Avasarala and Bobbie seek refuge aboard the Rocinante.[1]
Recap
On the Rocinante, Avasarala is unconscious in the med bay recovering from the recent trauma in the Razorback escaping the UN ship. Draper butts heads with the crew and won't reveal why she and Avasarala were on the run. Holden interrupts the confrontation and states they are lucky to be off of everyone's radar and will continue towards Io. Holden tells Draper that they will fix the Razorback's communication capabilities so they can be on their way and that's all he owes her and Avasarala.
On Earth, Gillis and Errinwright discuss whether they should take preemptive strikes against the five MCRN stealth retaliatory stations that could launch nuclear destruction down upon Earth. Gillis is not convinced this is the best course of action so, giving himself more time to consider, he postpones his decision of a preemptive strike until all five bases are identified.
On the UNN Agatha King, Admiral Souther, having received orders to pick up a dropship, receives further orders from Fleet Admiral Nguyễn that the inhabitants of the dropship are to be considered prisoners; no one is to question them and he provides coordinates for a rendezvous.
On the dropship that escaped from Guanshiyin, Cotyar and Theo, the tech, receive notice they are to be rescued by the Agatha King. Theo, who is unclear what he should say to his captors, asks Cotyar for guidance. Cotyar misdirects Theo's attention away from himself so he can strangle/break Theo’s neck, understanding Theo would be quick to tell his captors the entire story.
On Io, Jules-Pierre Mao watches the children play and sees a picture of his daughter, Julie, transformed by the protomolecule. Katoa shows Mei his glowing blue arm and shows off his ability to climb. On the Roci, while taking out Prax's staples, Burton talks about his background.
Kamal sees Nagata looking up Tycho Station on the maps of the Razorback as she is fixing its comms and realizes she is tempted to leave. When Avasarala awakes, she is unsuccessful in getting Holden to agree to send a message to the Agatha King to stop the war.
When Nguyễn arrives on the Agatha King, he tells Souther that Avasarala is a traitor and was working with Mao. He interrogates Cotyar, who is in a med bay of the ship recovering, with Souther watching. Cotyar says a UNN ship fired on the Guanshiyin, that Errinwright is the traitor and lies that Avasarala is dead. Nguyễn doesn't believe Cotyar but Souther is suspicious. At the UN, Gillis and Anna argue about his speech and whether or not to strike Mars' stealth platforms. Mao meets Mei and starts to bond with her. Alex gets a message from his wife, Talissa, that she's glad he's alive but his family doesn't need him any more.
Gillis is told that all five of Mars' stealth platforms have been found but despite Errinwright's insistence they strike, Gillis holds out for better odds of taking them all out. Avasarala shares complete details with the Roci crew of Mao conspiring with Errinwright and creating protomolecule hybrids from children as a weapon. Holden reveals they defeated a hybrid and Prax explains that Io is the location of the experiment, his daughter among them. Nagata reveals she gave the Belt the protomolecule which shocks Avasarala. On Io, Katoa collapses.
Souther arranges fake power outages to question Cotyar alone. Cotyar reveals the truth about Errinwright and Mao which Souther believes. Nguyễn suspects Souther's actions, relieves him of command and orders the Agatha King to Io.
With the odds of a preemptive attack on the Mars stealth platforms maxed, Gillis gives approval. All five are destroyed, though one launches before being blown up. Earth's defenses shoot down all the missiles but one, which impacts Brazil, killing two million.
On Io, Mao orders Dr. Strickland to end the experiment on the children, which Strickland protests.
In the galley of the Roci, Avasarala can't reach an understanding with Nagata who knows she wants to secure a protomolecule sample for Earth. They both conclude that they won't be friends. Errinwright blames the missile launch and its destruction on Gillis' earlier order to stand down, which he relays to Anna, who is disgusted.

Naomi : Sounds like things are going well.
Holden : The Martians are bonding.
Holden : How is she?
Naomi : Stable.
31 : She's got some neural damage, but nothing meds can't fix.
32 : A few more minutes in that burn might've killed her.
Alex : This one's not telling us why they're out here.
Holden : That's not our concern.
Alex : Of course it is.
Holden : We just dodged a massive bullet. Scopes are clear. No ships tracking us. It's a God damn miracle, getting out of this thing like nothing happened.
Alex : Something did happen.
Amos : It's over and done.
Amos : We're going to Io. Right?
Prax : That's right.
Bobbie : Io?
Prax : My daughter's there. We hope.
Bobbie : Madam Avasarala has information that could help stop this war. You can't just drag her to Io in the midst of it.
Amos : Then take your ship and leave. No one's keeping you here.
Bobbie : We're target practice in that thing. It's defenseless, the comms are locked out, it's not--
Holden : We'll fix your comms! After that, we don't owe you anything.
47 : You can't just turn your back and pretend this war isn't happening.
48 : If they don't use the ship, then you should take it and go.
49 : Go to Tycho. Do what you have to do.
Earth plans a preemptive strike
50 : We have confirmed ID on the contact. It is a Martian Stealth-C Ballistic Missile Platform.
51 : It holds 10 planet busters, each with 20 high-yield MIRV warheads.
52 : Our Watchtower satellites are the only things that can penetrate their stealth tech, but it's far from perfect.
53 : This is the first time that we've been able to locate two of their Platforms at once.
54 : It's a hell of a break.
55 : And a golden opportunity.
56 : Now, the Martians are always moving these Platforms and they're using sensor blinding, so when they move, we lose them.
57 : But as a group, they're always positioned to optimize strike times to Earth.
58 : So if we know where two of them are, we can predict where the rest of them most likely will be.
59 : How many Platforms are out there?
60 : Intel says five, and confidence is high.
61 : If we can find the other three, then we can use our planetary rail guns to simultaneously destroy them all before launch.
62 : A preemptive strike.
63 : Yes.
64 : It would have to be perfect.
65 : If it's not, Mars will retaliate immediately.
66 : With justification. Millions of lives would be at risk.
67 : Yes, but sir, our operatives in the MCRN Command are convinced that they're on the verge of launching anyway, so--

69 : 'Cause they're losing the war and they know it.
70 : Well, fighting in the Outer Planets is different than bringing it to our own doorstep. Mars isn't stupid. Or crazy. They could be deliberately leaking, pushing us to the peace table.
71 : Sir, that's not what's happening here.
72 : If this doesn't work, millions will die.
73 : People are dying right now. Our people. When we began this war, we had a five to one advantage in ships. Now it's down to three to one.
74 : Every minute this war goes on costs us more lives. Every loss that we inflict on Mars pushes them closer to launch.
75 : If we do this, we save lives because it will end the war.
76 : Find the other Platforms. I'll give you my decision then.
The Agatha King picks up a distress signal
77 : [grunts]

79 : Somebody heard us.

84 : How many survivors?
85 : Unknown. They must've lost comms. We pinged their distress beacon, but the registry data on the answer-back was minimal. No manifest, no crew list, nothing.
86 : Any skiff in the fleet could've handled this.

88 : - Lot I don't understand about this war. But even in low-g, shit still rolls downhill.

Souther : - This is nothing like Vesta.

92 : Re-patching decks 2 and 3 as we speak. Wiring on this bucket really needs an overhaul.
93 : Let's hope her outsides hold up better than her insides.
Souther : She won't let us down. There's a reason we don't put these old girls out to pasture.

Souther : Agatha, don't listen to them.

Amos : Everyone who ever cared about me on Earth thinks I'm dead. But here I am.

Holden : Any tight-beam would give away our position. And we already took that risk rescuing you. We're not doing it again.

Holden : He stopped fighting battles he knew he couldn't win.
Avasarala : - This isn't just about the war. We need to contain the protomolecule, make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.

Nguyễn : The Secretary General has issued an Executive Order to apprehend Chrisjen Avasarala, on suspicion of treason.

Nguyễn : She was conspiring with Jules-Pierre Mao. Her last known location was aboard his yacht, which is now the debris field you fished the prisoner out of. Keep this need-to-know.
Souther : May I accompany you, sir?
Nguyễn : - Of course.
232 : - [grunting]
Nguyễn : Outside.
234 : Yes, sir.
Souther : Mr. Ghazi, I'm Admiral Souther. This is Fleet Admiral Nguyễn.
Cotyar : Well, you Navy boys sure know how to roll out the red carpet. I figured a rock hopper would be my ride home. Lucky for me, there's a war going on.
237 : Well, your friend wasn't as lucky.
Cotyar : - Explosion shook us pretty good.

Cotyar : Jules-Pierre Mao's goons executed her.
Nguyễn : So she gets killed, but you still managed to escape. I find that hard to believe.
Cotyar : We barely got to the drop ship. It's a miracle.
Nguyễn : There's another ship docked to the Guanshiyin. A racing pinnace.
Cotyar : The Martian took it.
251 : Those Marines are bad ass, but… of course you know that better than anyone.
Nguyễn : I think your boss is still alive. I think she's defecting to Mars.
Cotyar : Well, maybe you should've called to ask her before your people blew up the Guanshiyin.
Nguyễn : Are you implying that UNN forces destroyed a civilian yacht?
Cotyar : I'm not implying shit. It's a God damn fact.
Nguyễn : Pathetic.
Nguyễn : [chuckles]You're gonna be charged with treason, too. Cooperate and you might avoid a death sentence.
Cotyar : Talk to Errinwright. He's the traitor, he's been protecting Jules-Pierre Mao all along. He can tell you everything you want to know.

Sorrento-Gillis : Yes. The necessity of hard choices, of sacrifice.
Anna : Sacrifice literally means to make sacred. Do you think that's what's going on here?
Sorrento-Gillis : Yes. Sacred losses.
Sorrento-Gillis : Maybe this war was inevitable. Maybe there was no way to avoid it. But you want it to be holy, and it's not. The best you can hope for is that it's justified.
Sorrento-Gillis : And if Mars makes it a choice between us or them?

Alex : We've been running silent for a quite a spell now, and that last battle was a real thumper. So, I just wanna make sure everything is A-okay when we need it.
Holden : All right, make it quick.
Alex : Yes, sir.

Talissa : Alex...
Talissa : we thought you were dead for so long. And I'm glad that you're not. Really, I am. But you waited too long.
Talissa : Melas has learned to live without a father, and a real husband wouldn't have done that to his wife.

Avasarala : - I wanted to personally thank you for helping us… …but, more importantly, to cut out all the bullshit. I'll go first.

Cotyar : In exchange for immunity, he was going to testify that he and Errinwright had been colluding to develop the protomolecule into a weapon, and would turn over all data to the UN instead of the Martians.
Cotyar : Errinwright turned the tables on all of us.
Souther : That means Nguyễn's been working with him. Avasarala isn't dead, is she?
Cotyar : She got off the yacht with the Martian Marine. I don't know what happened after that.
Souther : Can you prove any of this?
Cotyar : No. But Errinwright sent a message admitting everything. And Avasarala has it.
