Katoa was the son of Basia and Lucia Merton and lived on Ganymede prior to the Ganymede incident. He suffered from Myers-Skelton Premature Immunosenescence.

During the Ganymede incident, Katoa went missing.[1] Unbeknownst to his parents, who fled Ganymede without their son shortly after the incident, he had actually been kidnapped by his doctor Strickland to be experimented upon. His body was later uncovered by Holden and Praxidike Meng.[2]

Katoa's family eventually became some of the first settlers on Ilus. His father, Basia, never forgave himself for leaving Katoa behind to die on Ganymede.[3]
