Katoa Merton was the son of Basia Merton and friend of Mei Meng who suffers the same ailment, Myers-Skelton Premature Immunosenescence, and is treated by the same pediatrician, Dr. Strickland.
Biography[]
Background[]
Throughout the series[]
Katoa was the first "new" type of hybrid, i.e. one with immune defect, produced by Dr. Strickland. His condition allowed his body to inhibit and coexist with the protomolecule infection.
In "Reload", he was seen disassembling a nurse's corpse and talking about analyzing this body's pathways. His murmuring appears to be him talking to the rest of protomolecules.
In "Immolation", he was unleashed by Dr. Strickland to slow the approach of Holden's team. After a long fall, he was killed by Bobbie Draper's machinegun fire to the head.
Personality[]
Katoa was initially much like any other boy of his age, being relatively carefree and naive.
As the hybrid transformation progressed, Katoa's mind was eventually overtaken by the protomolecule's collective consciousness.

Notes[]
- Katoa is mentioned by his father, Basia, then again by Prax in the tenth episode of the second season, "Cascade"
- An image appears in the early season teaser trailer that represents the character having been hybridized by protomolecule, a process that was not completed in the novel.
- The same image appears on the monitors in episode 3 and episode 4 despite the character himself not having achieved that state at that point.
- A later S3 trailer shows Mei in an encounter with another child, presumably Katoa, in a moderate stage in the hybrid transformation process. Those scenes appear in season 3 episode 3.
- The character in the early and intermediate stages of protomolecule infection is portrayed by Jaeden Noel. The character in advanced stage of infection is credited as Katoa Hybrid and is portrayed by Jordan Dacol.
